So I bought two windowsill growing boxes, a bag of potting soil, and a few seed packets and got to gardening.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.summet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/growing_plants-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-4151\" src=\"https:\/\/www.summet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/growing_plants-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"growing_plants\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.summet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/growing_plants-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.summet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/growing_plants-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.summet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/growing_plants-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.summet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/growing_plants-1-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course, plants won&#8217;t grow this well indoors without a grow light, so I bought a LED one on Ebay, and had to build a stand for it out of 2&#215;2 lumber and 1\/2&#8243; PVC pipe.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.summet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/eery_glow.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-4152\" src=\"https:\/\/www.summet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/eery_glow-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"eery_glow\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.summet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/eery_glow-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.summet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/eery_glow-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.summet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/eery_glow-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.summet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/eery_glow-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The light isn&#8217;t quite that purple in real life, but it definitely affects the color balance nearby.<\/p>\n<p>Things to know if you are building your own:<br \/>\nA single 10&#8242; section of PVC and an 8&#8242; section of 2&#215;2 is plenty for one stand.<br \/>\nA 7\/8&#8243; spade bit drills a perfect hole for a 1\/2&#8243; ID PVC pipe to fit into.<br \/>\nA 3\/4&#8243; to 1\/2&#8243; T adapter will slide easily over the top of an 1\/2&#8243; PVC pipe upright while holding a PVC pipe crossbar.<br \/>\nA 9\/64&#8243; drill bit works for making a pilot hole in PVC for an M4 screw, but the screw is tight.<br \/>\nIt takes a lot less white spray paint to cover PVC than black spray paint.<\/p>\n<p>A video of the build can be viewed here:<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/OAWMbfaNtQA?rel=0\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I wanted an indoor herb and lettuce garden, so that I wouldn&#8217;t have to buy a whole bag of lettuce, basil, chives, etc whenever I needed just a few pieces for a sandwich or recipe.
