The test positivity rate over the last week was 18.2%.<br \/>\nThis is worse than the highest previous peak in January. \u00a0 The exponential growth can be blamed on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.summet.com\/blog\/2021\/07\/18\/the-delta-variant-and-why-case-numbers-in-florida-will-continue-to-go-up-in-july\/\">Delta Variant<\/a> and the relaxing of masking and social distancing.<\/p>\n<p>Historically, Orange County has had a case fatality rate of near 1%, so that would indicate we are due to see about 11 deaths per day in the near future, but as death numbers are no longer part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/ww11.doh.state.fl.us\/comm\/_partners\/covid19_report_archive\/covid19-data\/\">FDOH weekly reports<\/a> for counties I have no way of knowing if the case fatality rate has started to drop due to vaccinations of high-risk groups or has increased due to the Delta variant.<\/p>\n<p>We have vaccinated (at least a first dose) 780,452 people (out of a population of 1,457,445, or 54% of the total. If you discount children 12 and under who are not yet eligible for vaccination, Orange County has vaccinated 63% of the eligible population. \u00a0 We vaccinated 62,349 people in July (Compared to 65,206 in June, 88,482 in May and 151,176 in April.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hospitalizations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although the FDOH is not reporting county level hospitalization numbers, we can assume that the admissions curves for Orange County are similar to the entire state of Florida.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.summet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/hospital-admissions-florida.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-5497\" src=\"https:\/\/www.summet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/hospital-admissions-florida-1024x512.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.summet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/hospital-admissions-florida-1024x512.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.summet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/hospital-admissions-florida-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.summet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/hospital-admissions-florida-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.summet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/hospital-admissions-florida-500x250.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.summet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/hospital-admissions-florida.jpg 1133w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>AdventHealth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orlandoweekly.com\/Blogs\/archives\/2021\/07\/30\/adventhealth-postpones-all-non-emergency-surgery-enters-black-status-with-nearly-1000-covid-19-hospitalizations\">has entered &#8216;black&#8217; status and postponed all non-emergency surgeries<\/a> confirming that they have more hospitalizations than in January, which matches the state level graph.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nursing Homes<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.summet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/nursing_homes_florida_july27th.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5493\" src=\"https:\/\/www.summet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/nursing_homes_florida_july27th.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1011\" height=\"623\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.summet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/nursing_homes_florida_july27th.png 1011w, https:\/\/www.summet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/nursing_homes_florida_july27th-300x185.png 300w, https:\/\/www.summet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/nursing_homes_florida_july27th-768x473.png 768w, https:\/\/www.summet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/nursing_homes_florida_july27th-487x300.png 487w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1011px) 100vw, 1011px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nWe are seeing a small uptick in covid-19 cases in nursing homes. According <a href=\"https:\/\/states.aarp.org\/florida\/nursing-home-staff-covid-vaccines\">to the AARP<\/a>, in Florida&#8217;s nursing homes &#8220;Roughly 3 in 10 nursing home residents and 3 in 5 health care staffers are not fully vaccinated. The state\u2019s nursing home vaccination rates are well below national averages&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>End in sight?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the United Kingdom, which was hit by the Delta variant earlier than the US, daily case numbers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2021\/world\/united-kingdom-covid-cases.html\">are starting to drop<\/a>. \u00a0 It may be possible that through vaccinations and &#8220;naturally obtained immunity&#8221; that the UK is reaching the herd immunity threshold.
