Picture 3 - Nick Fields

Nick Fields, who was our archaeology professor, is an ex-royal British Marine with a doctorate in military history. On field trips he would roll his own cigarettes while exclaiming things like "Come on chaps, form a queue and hurry along".

One evening in our hotel in Crete he told us to "...be sure to bring your torches tomorrow." After we figured out that torches were flashlights, we figured he was kidding, until he lead us into a Minoan chamber tomb. (Our other adventure in the dark occurred at Mycenae, when groups of five of us were lead down the 99 step "secret cistern" carved out of solid rock, which was used as a source of water during sieges. )

Nick was only one of the three teachers provided by the Athens Center.
Nikos Stavroulakis, who the Athens Center flew in from Crete each week to lecture us on Byzantine History was a terrific though-provoking lecturer who probably offended everybody in class at least once (how else was he going to provoke thoughts?).
This picture of Nikos was taken when he visited CWU a few years later.

Yanna Nella taught our Greek language class, and gave us a local's insight into the modern Greek culture along with the fundamentals of the language. Unfortunately, because I was not in the habit of bringing my camera to lectures, and her classes did not have field trips, I do not have a good picture of Yanna.

In addition to the Monuments of Greece (Archaeology) class, the Byzantine History class, and our Greek language course, each of the two visiting professors from the United States taught a course. Dr. Harris taught a Travel Writing (Journalism) course and Dr. Donahue lead colloquium where we read, discussed, and wrote expository papers on many of the classical Greek writings on philosophy, as well as their tragedies and comedies.
